Nerve Centre of Empire / Connecting Cornwall / Expanding Frontiers / 1870-1918
Exciting new exhibition now open - that brings to life the fascinating lives of the staff and local people behind the technology
Monday Volunteer Days
Come and meet retired telegraph operators and learn face to face about how the cable system ran. We have telegraph equipment running in the museum everyday.
Porthcurno Sculpture Garden
Sci-art sculptures inspired by the science behind the collections. Set in the museum gardens are sculptures that incorporate sound, light and a climbing structure.
Secret World War II Tunnels
Buried in the hills, behind one of the finest beaches in Cornwall, are two secret tunnels that hide the story of how Britain led the communications revolution.
Cable Trail and the Cable House
Above the beautiful beach of Porthcurno lies the only surviving intact cable house in the world with 14 cable terminals. These cables went out under the beach to connect Britain with her empire. Between the museum and the cable house is a trail that includes these training poles.
Free demonstrations for visitors throughout the day
Find out from a real person the story behind the telegraph, demonstrated with working equipment.
Temporary Exhibitions Programme
Exhibitions in 2010 include 'Parish at War: St Levan in World War Two', and 'Nerve Centre of Empire: Cornwall connecting the world 1870-1918'.
What all museums should be like
Fascinating museum about the biggest telegraph station in the world and full of fun activities for all ages, including science interactives.

telegraph (Oxford English Dictionary definition)
noun a system or device for transmitting messages from a distance along a wire, especially one creating signals by making and breaking an electrical connection.
verb 1 send a message to by telegraph. 2 send (a message) by telegraph. 3 convey (an intentional or unconscious message) with facial expression or body language.

Porthcurno valley, in the far west of Cornwall, was the hub of international cable communications from 1870-1970 and a training college for the communications industry until 1993.
In WWII secret tunnels were dug by Cornish miners to house an underground building and the entire telegraph operations. These bomb proof/gas proof tunnels provided 14 secure cables out of the UK to its allies.

We currently have three PhD students and several academic researchers involved in researching in the archives on several projects.
Cable and Wireless has employed thousands in the communications industry for generations- many coming from the same families - we hold staff records for many of the companies that now make up C&W.
